PS 2017

DINNERWARE SET FOR IKEA

Dining at home today isn’t the same as it used to be – it’s no longer just about sitting at the table. More often, we eat on the sofa or move around while snacking. Observing these everyday habits, we designed a plate and a bowl with a higher rim and an elevated surface to make eating more convenient.

We collaborated with expert glassmakers and engineers, going through several rounds of prototypes to perfect the curves. It was an incredible lesson in craftsmanship and technology.

While working on the IKEA PS 2017 collection, we took a closer look at what comfort means – especially when it comes to food.

The plates are made from tempered glass in a highly specialized factory in France. The production process is both precise and innovative: a carefully measured portion of liquid glass is dropped into a preheated, spinning mold, where centrifugal force distributes it evenly, shaping the final product. Creating the right-angled mold required exceptional precision to make this process possible.

The result is a material with the refined look of fine bone china but with superior durability and resistance – unlike porcelain, it is built to last.

The higher rim helps prevent spills when carrying a bowl of soup and protects fingers from the heat. The elevated surface is perfect for croutons – keeping them crisp instead of melting into the soup – or for spices, allowing each person to season their dish to taste.
